Sun Run Weather Forecast - Today!

Well, the big day is here! I realized one flaw with these weather forecasts is the predicted high usually isn't reached until sometime in the afternoon. But, that's ok.  Our garage is usually around 5-7 degrees when we run on the treadmill. It was really the rain I was more concerned about, because I'm a big wimp!





I'm a bit nervous, but my primary goal today is just to go out and have fun. I'm already all dressed and just need to assemble our drinks, brush my teeth, and hop in the car. Hopefully I'll have a chance to post after the run to let you know my time. Until then, assume that I ran it in 58 minutes ;)

Sun Run Weather Forecast - April 14th

Variable cloudiness. High of 12; low of 4. Twenty percent probability of precipitation. Perfect weather for a run. Remember to wear sunscreen people! It'll keep you cooler. I hope to update on how the weather actually was after the run but I may not do that right away since Lance has a hockey practice and then we're having some friends over to watch Canucks face-off against Dallas for Game 3 of the series.

So, today the forecast has been changed to just cloudy with no rain.  There's rain the day before and rain the day after, but none on the 15th.  And, it looks like the expected temperature is just below 10 degrees.  That I can handle.  Chances are, you'll be seeing more updates like this one.

Weather Forecast

Well, who thought that we'd have snow in April the week before Easter!!!  Right now huge flakes are rapidly falling.  I'm glad I don't have to work and I'm wondering if it'll disappear in time for me to walk to the store for some groceries today.  If it doesn't, I'm sensing a change in menus for this evening.



In other weather forecasting news, the long term forecast is predicting rain for the Sun Run with temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius.  Brrrrr!  I'll be watching the forecast and hoping that it changes to something a little bit drier at least.

Weather Accessories

If you consider our usual weather plus the fact that I often walk/take transit in it, and that I'm slightly obsessed with the weather, it would seem logical and natural that I should also develop a slight obsession with weather accessories. I've blogged about my most recent umbrella purchase (which is still going great) and now I've discovered an umbrella that is addressing the wind/umbrella issue. Maybe the next generation of umbrellas will all look like that one?

SNOW DAY!

So I just got a call from work saying not to come in today! Apparently it took everyone about 2 hours to get into work and they were just going to close early tonight. It probably won't be a busy day either. I just called my husband's office, and they've had one phone call all morning. They aren't the absolute busiest office, but they usually are busier than that!

So, now I get to decide what to do. I had already gotten myself all dolled up for work - hair and makeup is done and I'm dressed for the office. This is probably a good thing since it'll prevent me from just crawling back into my nice warm bed.

However, I didn't really have a lot to get done today, so I now need to figure out what to do. I may just be doing a bunch of computer related stuff and be doing a bunch of blog posts, so you may hear more from me today. The natural alternate would be a bunch of cleaning stuff. I know that there are a few flylady missions I wouldn't mind tackling.

My Umbrella has a Name

Pylon is its name and I will call it Pylon.

I have chosen this name for my new umbrella for several reasons.

First, when I spend nearly $30 on an umbrella, I feel it deserves a bit more distinction than simply being an un-named utility object. Also, it's a pretty nice umbrella that seems to be fairly well-made (although, I think I said that about the last one too, and see how long that one lasted!). Now, my umbrella isn't special enough to warrant giving it its own seat on the bus like some people I've seen, but it's special enough for a name.

The second reason I chose to give Pylon its name is because it is roughly the same colour as a traffic pylon. Yup, it's a nice incredibly bright orange colour. Since I was nearly run over by a car recently during a dark and stormy evening, I thought something a bit more visible would be appropriate. Hot pink was not really an option, so I opted for orange.

Pylon is Italian designed and has an unlimited warranty according to the tag. (I have not yet been able to locate any meaningful information about this warranty, but the mention of it is somewhat comforting.) The handle is a bit small but comfortable to grip. It folds up small enough to fit in my huge purse. It's bright enough to see in the bottom of my huge purse. It even has an automatic open button, a feature I don't usually go for in fear of accidental untimely umbrella-opening incidents. The part that you grab to pull the umbrella down is much nicer than my last one, which took a small chunk of skin out of my thumb one evening as I arrived home.

Pylon has been through some introductory tests consisting of a bit of light rain and some slight breezes. It performed remarkably well on these initial tests but we'll see how it fares through the rest of our (never ending) rainy season.

I'd post a picture right now, but I'm at work and since I don't have a SmartPhone which would allow me to take a picture and upload it instantaneously, you'll just have to wait until you see me on a rainy day (which will no longer be difficult to manage with the bright umbrella I'll be carrying) to actually see what Pylon looks like.

Umbrella 2 - Jenn 0

So, I have been beaten by my umbrella once again. The most recent one that I bought has broken and I now must get yet another. I'm hoping that this one will last for the rest of the season. I'd like to get a nicer quality one, but the only places I know for those are out in Vancouver, and I don't really have the time right now to go out there umbrella-shopping. I would like one of the ones I saw that has a microfibre case you can zip it up in, but in our rainy weather I don't have the leisure to go on an umbrella goose-chase.

Lame Excuses for Not Blogging Lately

I meant to blog, I really did. Here are my lame excuses why I couldn't.

1) Been too busy.

2) Been working.

3) Didn't have power at home because of the storm.

4) Was going to post more from work, but I kept getting interrupted by people. Then I was going to do one about the boil water advisory, but then the advisory got lifted for my area make the post moot.

5) The dog ate my blog. Really! It did!

Anyway, just back from kickboxing and the second storm looks like it's here to do some more damage. As an insurance broker I keep analyzing everything according to what hazards are there. If I see some damage on the way somewhere I think, "gee, I hope we don't insure them!"

I'm thankful I don't have small kids that had to be kept fed and warm during the power outage. I'm also thankful that we had plenty of water set aside before the advisory. However, I just added another 2L pop bottle to the freezer. Not only can it be defrosted for clean drinking water, it also helps to insulate the freezer helping frozen food last longer when the power does go out. I'm also considering getting an emergency radio too.

Oh, the weather outside is frightful . . .

So we are feeling the full force of a storm right now. And, despite the fact that many local businesses are out of power, we are still going. >P Many people seem to be wandering the mall here simply because they have nothing to do in a dark and cold house right now. The food court seems to be doing pretty darn well for today.

From a work standpoint, it's a hard day since a lot of what we're dealing with are tails of hardship from our clients. Imagine having part of your roof blow off. Or having a tree fall in your driveway, which prevents you from moving your other vehicles out of harms way. Then you get to watch as a couple more trees fall on your trailer. But, at least part of what I get to do is give people a little bit of peace of mind and get them in touch with people who can actually help.

From a personal standpoint, I'm sure glad I live on the top of hill! I'm also quite happy to be taking public transit. Instead of sitting bored in my car inching through 4 way stop procedures and worrying about the car behind me hydroplaning, I'll be able to sit on a heated bus and play some video games or listen to my walkman and take a nap. I'm also very thankful that my husband is a traditionalist when it comes to alarm clocks so that we'll have something to wake us up if the power outages continue.

With our great deluge lately, I've been forging a new relationship with the windshield wipers on our Honda Civic. I have to say that I feel sorry for people who do not have variable windshield wiper settings. In fact, for anyone buying a car in the lower mainland, I'd say that windshield wiper settings should be a major factor to consider.

This morning I got to drive to work and doing this allowed me to use all the different settings on the car. When we left it was lightly raining and the interval setting was enough. Then, when I dropped Lance off at work it started really pelting down, so I shortened the interval to the fastest one possible. But, then I had to drive along a major road so I switched them on to their low setting. However, this only seemed to make it rain harder, so they went all the way up to high. The heavy rain didn't last long though, so it got switched back down to low. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. It went this way for the entire 20 minute drive in to work this morning.

I think I'm kind of weird though. I've driven in heavy fog and torrential rain, and I kinda like it. It sort of gives you an adrenaline rush because you have to be even more aware of what's going on because of the reduced visibility. I guess my opinion might change if I were driving for more than 20 minutes or a half an hour at a stretch though. And, I don't think I'd like icy conditions very much. But, I guess time will tell since I'll probably face them this winter. The good news is that I don't panic nearly as much as I used to. I mean, a year ago, I probably would have opted to take the bus to work in the rain rather than drive by myself in it.
